Alpinestars Missile Jacket Review + Video
The Alpinestars Missile Jacket is an aggressive sports jacket from Alpinestars built to keep you covered whether you’re riding on the roads or tearing up the racetrack. The premium jacket is fully constructed out of 1.3mm of full grain cowhide leather and is completely unique in allowing you to further upgrade the jacket by zipping in Alpinestars’ Tech Air airbag. It has been designed for comfort and it is CE certified and comes with all the racetrack basics.
Besides the airbag compatibility, Alpinestars have done well in offering the jacket as either a standalone or as a two-piece race suit and you do get a ladies Stella version, and there is also the Missile jacket’s sibling, the Alpinestars Missile Ignition with some minor changes throughout. So, with a recommended retail price of about 500 Euros or 600 USD, the jacket will be in competition with the Revit Hyperspeed Pro and the Dainese Super Speed 3 jacketsv.
The Alpinestars Missile Jacket is fully made of a premium race ready leather main chassis constructed from 1.3mm genuine bovine leather with a high level of abrasion resistance for on track riding. For comfort and flexibility, there are abrasion resistant Hyper-Res Stretch Fiber (HRSF) stretch fabric panels on the inside of the sleeves. To prevent chafing, there is also additional neoprene comfort fabric in the collar and the cuffs.
Lastly, the jacket includes an aerodynamic and ergonomic speed hump that has been sculpted for better airflow and performance at high speed, and it even includes additional perforations for better airflow. The jacket is also certified to CE Category 2 2016/425 standards.
For protection, the Alpinestars Missile Tech Air Compatible Leather Jacket is designed to accommodate Alpinestars' CE certified Alpinestars GP-R protectors in the shoulders and elbows. On top of these protectors, Alpinestars have then class leading protective features in their dynamic friction shield dual density TPU sliders for even more safety. The elbow slider is anatomically contoured and is ergonomically designed. For a bit more safety and comfort it includes integrated foam padding in the small of the back, chest, and arms.
The jacket’s safety can then be further upgraded with a Level 2 CE-certified Alpinestars Nucleon back protector thanks to the adjustable snap button system, which makes integration much easier. The jacket is also prepared with chest pad compartments for the Alpinestars Nucleon chest pads, which are also sold separately.
Lastly, if you really want to take the Missile to the next level, the jacket is compatible with Alpinestars' class leading Tech Air airbag system, which includes a back protector, and provides the torso with substantially more protection than ordinary impact protectors. The Tech Air Race airbag would then cover your back, chest, kidneys, and shoulders. And you do need the race airbag even if you do plan to just use the jacket on the street.
To support the system, there is also an LED indicator system in the sleeve which will connect to the airbag through a wire connection in the back. The airbag is sold separately, but this does add a great level of flexibility to the Alpinestars jacket since you can always choose to upgrade to that airbag later rather than having to choose between a jacket that either does or does not have an airbag.
To ensure that the jacket is comfortable, the garment is designed with stretch gussets to help movement and comfort on the bike. These large accordion stretch panels are found in the back, shoulders, and elbow in addition to the stretch fabric panels in the arms. The sleeves also use a pre-curved construction to support a sport riding position.
For ventilation, the Tech Air compatible jacket has been specially perforated with large leather panels for strong airflow and abrasion resistance. These localized perforations can be found in the chest, bicep, sleeve, and back. However, if you need more airflow, then there are zippered vents on either side of the upper chest. It’s important to note that you also have the Alpinestars Missile Ignition Airflow Jacket which has slightly different vent locations and leather paneling.
For fastening, the jacket uses a Velcro tab at the top followed by a single zipper hidden under the leather paneling. With the zipper undone, you can now see the jacket’s interior mesh liner and the waterproof wallet pocket in the chest.
Lastly, the Alpinestars Missile Motorcycle Jacket includes two zippered hand warmer pockets on either side. And it can be adjusted with straps and snaps in the waist and zips in the sleeves placed next to adjustable Velcro cuffs. Though this may also vary depending on which Missile Jacket you’re looking at.
