The Klim Baja S4 is a jacket gives a strong focus on multi-tasking. It focuses on comfort, protection, ventilation, and is meant for dual on and off-road riding to boot. So, it is designed to do and handle a lot.
The Klim Baja S 4 Jacket is made of a mix of Schoeller Dynatec, Superfabric, Cordura, and Karbonite micromesh which is already an impressive array of names for just one jacket. So, with a recommended retail price of about 640 Euros, or 690 US Dollars, the Baja S4 jacket will also be competing with the Revit Defender Pro Gore-Tex and the Dainese D-Explorer 2 Motorcycle Jackets.
The Klim Baha S4 is made of a variety of materials, each with a specific purpose in mind. First, the ventilating mesh in the body and arms is made of Schoeller Dynatec nylon mesh. This is a high-tensile polyamide that is specially designed for ventilation and protection.
In stretch zones along the front and sides of the chest and arms, Klim have added Karbonite Micromesh 4-way stretch 1000D Cordura fabric. This is also another specially produced material that offers a high degree of flexibility, even if it is 1000D, and it is also durable.
The pockets, cuffs, and hem have been made of 750D Cordura, and abrasion areas in the shoulders and elbows feature ceramic plated Superfabric material, which is durable, breathable, and abrasion resistant.
While the jacket’s outer shell does offer a lot of abrasion protection, Klim have also added a decent level of impact protection inside. The shoulder and elbows both come with D3O CE Level 1 LP1 vented padding. This means that the pads will be flexible and will ventilate well, but in an impact, they will stiffen to provide the right level of protection.
Klim include a D3O CE Level 1 back pad, which is also something you rarely see in jackets. The jacket itself has a CE AA rating and is certified to prEN 17092-3 level.
The pockets holding the armor pads are adjustable, and the pockets themselves are made of Klimatek cooling stretch mesh for extra comfort. Lastly, the jacket is prepared for a Klim kidney belt, which is sold separately and the jacket has a zip to connect with the Klim Baja S4 Pants. So, it has a great level of features that will prove outstanding on the road.
For comfort, the Baja S4 will also do well. Since it is a summer jacket, we’ll start off with the ventilation. The Schoeller-Dynatec mesh panels in the front and arms alongside the Karbonite micromesh, ensure the jacket is also breathable. So, Klim have cleverly desiged the jacket so you don’t have to play around with complicated vents in the arms, back, or chest. This does come at the cost that the jacket will have limited seasonality to the summer, but Klim have made sure the Baja S4 is compatible with the Klim Enduro S4 waterproof jacket.
For fitment, the jacket includes pre-articulated arms for extra comfort and it uses adjustable Velcro in the cuffs. The bottom hem can also be adjusted with an elastic toggle and there are also additional adjustment tabs in the forearm. The only gripe about the jacket though is the lack of adjustability in the collar, though at least there are collar hooks to make things a bit easier if you want more airflow.
The Baja s4 will also come with plenty of pockets. First, is a forearm pocket where you can keep your ID or important documents. Then, there are 2 hand warmer pockets in the front in addition to the cargo pockets as well. Lastly, in the back there is a large cargo pocket for any other large items you may need or an additional liner.
The Baja S4 is fastened with a single zipper, and once that’s undone, you can see the jacket uses a polygeine moisture wicking anti-odor and anti-microbial liner. The jacket also comes with 2 zippered stash pockets along the bottom, an upper chest pocket, and a concealed document pocket behind the back pad.
Another nice feature inside the jacket is the 2-liter Hydrapak compatible pocket that comes with 2 house routing options, either the shoulder or under the arm. That way, you can ride in the sun, and stay hydrated. So, even though the adjustability may be a bit lacking, the comfort of this jacket is premium level.
Together, the Klim Baja S4 jacket and pants offer a great deal of value for hot weather riders looking for a jacket that will help them keep cool while still coming with plenty of protection and features.
