Sena 50S Bluetooth Headset Product Description

The Sena 50S marks the new generation of Sena’s Bluetooth communication systems. With their new Bluetooth 5.0 hardware and HD speakers, the Sena 50 Series gives riders a premium system with a focus on communication. In a slim package, Sena have managed to pack new Mesh 2.0 firmware, improved battery life, and better fast charging capability into the Sena 50S Bluetooth Headset while lowering its price compared to the Sena 30K.

Nonetheless, the Sena 50S will still be competing with the Cardo Packtalk Slim and the Cardo Scala Rider Packtalk Bold.

System Specifications

The Sena 50S runs on the new version of Bluetooth: Bluetooth 5.0. This means that the system is more efficient, has a greater range, and more robust connectivity. Overall, the Sena 50 S will have a battery life of up to 14 hours of Bluetooth intercom talk time and 9 hours of mesh communication time. So, the 50S does have a slightly larger battery than the 50R, offering an hour more for both intercom modes.

For long-distance rides, Sena have also improved the system’s fast charge capability. So, when at a road stop, you already get almost half of the system’s maximum talk time after 20 minutes of charging.

The Sena Mesh 2.0 intercom firmware is meant to completely replace the previous Mesh 1.0 network. Now, mesh conversations are more stable, perform better, and offer multi-channel open mesh intercom. This means that you can talk to a limitless number of riders within an 8km (5mi) radius, and you have a choice of 9 frequencies.

When using Bluetooth intercom or group mesh intercom with fewer than 6 riders, the system has a range of 2km (1.5mi). When the number of group mesh users rises above 6, then the system has the same 8km range as open mesh intercom. Lastly, the system allows you to bridge up to 3 other Bluetooth intercom users into the Mesh network.

The Sena 50-S allows you to use voice commands to ride hands free, and you can even use them on your phone. With just a “hey Siri” or “hey Google” you can interact with your phone via the Sena system without having to lift a finger.

Finally, the system uses an all new USB-C charger and WiFi adapter for firmware updates. So, you can fast charge your system while receiving the latest automatic updates for your 50S. For good measure, Sena have also added a normal USB-C charging cable for normal charging.

System Installation

For installing the system, the Sena 50S differs slightly from the Sena 50R. The 50S offers users the option of mounting the system with either a classic clamp mount that slides between the EPS and outer shell or with an adhesive mount that goes on the side of the helmet. In contrast, the 50R uses a clamp, adhesive hook and loop stickers, or double-sided adhesive.

What the Sena 50S lacks in mounting options, it more than makes up for with microphone choices. So, the 50S allows you to use a boom, wired, or wired boom microphone. This gives you more flexibility in how you want to talk, how much flexibility your microphone offers, and how large you want your microphone to be. To mount the microphone, Sena have also included adhesive hook and loop fasteners for a custom fit.

The HD speakers can easily mounted thanks to the adhesive Velcro stickers that are included in the box. If, once they are placed, you find your speaker cut-outs are too deep, then Sena have also included extra foam spacers. If you prefer your own earbuds, then the 50S also comes with a unique 3.5mm input port.

Basic Operations

Some of the Sena 50s’ basic functions include 3 intercom modes, FM radio, Bluetooth pairing, and Noise management capability. These are all controlled either with voice commands or with a classic Sena jog dial on the side of the system. So, the system allows you to talk with up to 8 riders via Bluetooth, 2-24 for group mesh, and an unlimited number for open mesh intercom. So, you can communicate with your group in the way that works best for you.

The system also offers FM radio capability where you can select or scan through stations and save up to 6 presets. However, if you just want to listen to your own music, then you can easily pair your phone or MP3 player and listen that way. This has the added benefit that you can take calls with the system hands free.

If you didn’t want to rely on Bluetooth for listening to music, the 50S also offers the additional functionality of an AUX port so that you can plug your music player in directly.

While listening to music or using the intercom, Sena have added two noise management technologies. First is the Sena 50S’ audio multi-tasking, which turns down the music while using your intercom or listening to directions. Second is the advanced noise control, which filters out background noise for intercom or phone conversations.

Lastly, the Sena 50S can be easily controlled with the new Sena 50 Utility App, which gives you more control over the system.

The Sena 50 S Bluetooth Communication System gives riders a greater level of control over how they talk, listen to music, and communicate. Whether the 50S or 50R, the 50 series represents a substantial improvement over previous Sena systems thanks to the latest technology.
